WPSREORG: reorganize WP documents

User Instructions

WPSREORG uses the Wang COPYWP utility to reorganize individual documents, file by file. One or more document libraries can be selected, and the reorganization process is conducted in background, freeing the workstation for other uses. A log is produced from each session.

To use, install the files as described (see Programmer Instructions, below). Run WPSREORG and select the libraries to be processed by entering a non-blank character next to each. To reorganize libraries not recognized by WP, press PF(09) to modify the volume name. When all selections have been made press (RETURN) to continue; the user's workstation screen will return to normal and WPSREORG will continue in background mode.

The WPSREORG system will then create (or modify) a procedure and submit it to background according to the current procedure usage constants. This procedure will reorganize the documents in the libraries selected and produce a report showing the success or failure of each attempt. Documents protected by password will be noted as such on the report and reorganized; damaged documents will be noted and bypassed.

Installation and use of the system requires the following:

1. Workstation requirements: due to the fact that the Word Processing system is used briefly in processing, WPSREORG requires a terminal capable of WP. In addition, the user's usage constants must be set properly for the procedure to be submitted and executed properly; these might be temporarily set by the procedure running WPSREORG.

2. Installation: move files WPDCPYWP, WPSRBACG, WPSREORG, and WPSRNLOG to library @WPREORG on the system volume. It is also best that the WPSRBACG file be given Security Administrator rights so it will be able to access all files.

3. Use: to select libraries to be reorganized, run WPSREORG and specify libraries. If there are no changes to the list of libraries to be processed, this process may be bypassed; simply submit the background procedure WPSRPROC.

Example of use

Set up library selections through WPSREORG. WPSREORG will submit the procedure to background using the current user's usage constants; this typically means that the procedure will execute immediately. If the procedure is cancelled from background (or otherwise intercepted), it could be run at a later time.

Comments

Solid performance; good logging. An excellent utility.

Since WPSREORG will change the modification dates on all files in the document libraries that are reorganized, use incremental backups will copy all files in the libraries that have been reorganized. Some commercial disk management software bypasses this problem by restoring the original modification history to the file.

Program bug: the background task WPSRPROC does not have any usage constants, so the print file is spooled directly to print class 'A' - the system default. Be prepared to either print or otherwise intercept this listing.
